EVERYTHING started well with the hope that England would reach the World Cup final, but Argentina produced another stunning comeback as the defending champions broke English hearts to reach their second successive World Cup final. It was a truly hard fought 90 minutes by both teams in Atlanta, and it was always going to be a close match, as the rivalry between the national football teams of Argentina and England and their fans is considered 1 of the most hostile within the sport.

Yes, Argentina beat England 2-1, but the atmosphere on Lord Street, Southport, outside the Lord Street Hotel, was extremely festive up until the very end. Fans were left shocked and a few even cried. Unlike in previous editions, both France and England were expected to reach the final, but in the words of Lionel Scaloni:- "That is a football game."

England's goal came in the 55th minute through:- Anthony Gordon, who steered home a low cross from:- Morgan Rogers. For a long time, it looked as though that strike might be enough, but Argentina’s late pressure proved decisive. Enzo Fernández equalised in the 85th minute with a magnificent strike from outside the box, and in the 92nd minute, substitute Lautaro Martínez headed in the winner from a deep cross. Both late goals were assisted by:- Lionel Messi, who continued to influence the game even in the final stages.

England will now play France on:- 18 July 2026 for 3rd place. Kick off in Miami, USA, will take place on:- Saturday, 18 July 2026, at:- 22:00 UK time, and the match will be shown on:- BBC One, and the BBC Sport website and app.

Sadly, there will be no extra Bank Holiday in England even if they secure 3rd place, but France versus England will definitely be worth watching.

Well done to England and good luck against France; you can do it!
